CHAMPIONSHIP TENNIS
PLAY BOOK
(For 1 or 2 Players)

CHAMPIONSHIP TENNIS applies strictly the rules of tennis. The match is played in
best of three sets. At 6-6 the tie-break is used to determine the winner of a
set.

YOUR CONTROLS

Insert game in the computer console cartridge slot, with the on-off switch in
position "OFF". These are the game-controls.

Play level is selected as follows by pressing:

DISK Championship speed (very fast)
1 Tournament (quite fast)
2 Training (medium speed)
3 Beginners (slow)

Once you have chosen playing speed, you must choose the tournament location by
pressing:

1 Flushing Meadows (synthetic surface)
2 Roland Garros (clay)
3 Wimbledon (grass)

The behaviour of the ball varies according to the surface chosen. The court of
your choice will appear, with flashing rectangle indicating the player
positions. A blue player first enters at the lower left corner of the screen.

The arrival of players allows you to choose the game configuration.

The computer takes both players in single match: press CLEAR (demonstration
mode). You against the computer: use the disk to position the blue player in one
of the flashing rectangles, and press ENTER (you will control the blue player).
A red player will appear lower left. Press CLEAR, the player will position
himself immediately (the computer will control this red player). You and a
friend want to play a single match: each competitor positions his man by means
of his contrller disk, and each presses ENTER. (A third light red player will
appear - press CLEAR and he will leave the count). Double match with computer:
(each competitor plays with a computer partner). Choose positions on opposite
sides of the net and press ENTER. When the third player appears, press "0" on
the keypad. The fourth player will then also appear, and the two computer
controlled players will take their respective positions. Doubles against a
computer team: position the red and blue players on the same side of the net and
press ENTER on each keypad. When the third player appears, press "0" on the
keypad. The two computer players will take their places opposite your doubles
team.

PLAYER MOVEMENT

The direction disk allows you to move your lpayer, who will remain always facing
the net.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SERVICE

Before each service, the computer will automatically place its players, who may
move within the rules of the game.

The lower right-hand player is always the first to serve. If it is a computer-
controlled player he will proceed to serve immediately.

The service squares are divided into three areas (see sketch). You can aim your
ball into one of these areas by first selecting on the keypad by pressing:

1 to serve close to the central line.
2 to serve into the middle of the service square.
3 to serve towards the exterior.

The computer will record your choice, and act upon it when you strike the ball.
If you do not change your choice, the same area will apply on all serves.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SERVING ACTION

A first push on one of the side buttons will cause the ball to be thrown into
the air.

A second push initiates the racket movement (you must get the timing right to
properly strike the ball). - The upper buttons give a fast service.

- The lower buttons a softer ball.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PLAYER CONTROL DURING RALLIES

Choice of stroke - forehand, backhand or smash - is made by the computer
according to the player's position in relation to the ball when the stroke is
made. If the ball is to the right of the player a forehand stroke will be
attempted, backhand if the ball is on the player's left, and a smash for a high
ball. The stroke is initiated by pressing one of the controller action-buttons.

The stroke is initiated by pressing one of the controller action-buttons.

The strength of the shot is determined as follows:

upper-buttons: strong fast shot;
lower-left: slow shot (or drop-shot);
lower-right: lob.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DIRECTION OF SHOT

At the moment of making the stroke, the racket describes an arc commencing
behind the player and terminating in front of him.

If the ball is struck at the end of the movement, a cross-court shot will
result. If the ball is struck at the start of the movement, a straight shot will
result. You see therefore that the relative positions of player and ball at the
moment you press the action button are critical. Try passing shots, wrong-
footing and take advantage of poor positioning by your opponent (the computer
will!).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SCORE-BOARD

At the end of each set, the score-board will appear for a few seconds. You can
also see the score during play by pressing 8 on your keypad. In this case, the
score will appear at the end of the game in progress.

At the end of the match, the winner or winners appear on the podium to
acknowledge the applause of the crowd.

During the match, various decisions of the umpire will appear:
